Congresswoman Wilson

It was a year long decision in the making and on May 18th, 2014 I was inducted into US Congresswoman Frederica Wilson's 5,000 Role Models of Excellence. It was quite amazing to witness the joy of families as they watch their young men graduate under the leadership of the Congresswoman and her role models to begin a new life as they go on to pursue their college education. It is an honor and privilege to work alongside the Congresswoman and her staff to bring about change for the better.

"While serving on The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida, Dr. Frederica S. Wilson noticed a pattern of minority boys being incarcerated, entering the drug trade, or dropping out of school at disproportionately high rates. Not willing to allow the lives of this vulnerable population of children to continue to be destroyed without direct intervention, Wilson began to challenge the men of Miami-Dade County to intervene in the lives of "at-risk" youth. Thus, 500 African American Male Role Models of Excellence was born and initiated through The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida. Wilson's vision gained immediate response from the community and continues to serve as a major force in the transition of raising young boys into manhood"....(The 5,000 Role Models of Excellence Project) for more information please visit http://5000rolemodels.dadeschools.net.

Hands of Change logo

There will come a time when our youth will rightfully claim the world as their own. I understand the importance of their mental development and the necessity to create an environment where they can thrive and grow to their fullest potential. Upon meeting 14 yr. old Skyler Colley, I noticed something special. He genuinely wanted what was best for others and as a testament to this he would donate his birthday gifts to those in need and still does to this very day. Skyler came to me with a vision of creating a group that could meet the needs of those who are less fortunate and I promised him that I would make that dream a reality. Over the next couple of months we would form what would become Hands of Change, Inc.

I understand the importance of leadership, hard work and responsibility so as a mentor I stress the same values to my students; teaching them the importance of community work and it's everlasting impact. Furthermore, we are joining forces with our local schools, law enforcement and businesses to take a stance against bullying. We have the power to bring about change for the better, it is only a matter of whether or not we will. The greatest gift is an act of kindness because people will never forget how you made them feel.

If you wish to donate please print out a copy of the donation letter here and mail it with your check made payable to Hands of Change, Inc.

May 22 - Pedro Jermaine serves as featured artist and guest speaker at Dr. Wilbert "Tee" Holloway's 4th Annual District 1 Art Show. "This year’s art show represented the fact that District 1 is both culturally and historically inspiring to its youth; it is a place where they can grow and thrive intellectually as well as artistically. The city of Miami and the multi-cultural, diverse population it holds, create a sense of identity and culture within each of us who live here. Through this visual arts exhibition, students can use art to put aside their cultural and racial differences. It is a means of bringing cultural cohesion and understanding; we would like the children to give a representation of their culture. The annual art exhibition allows children to experience the beauty of other cultures." - Dr. Holloway

Pedro Jermaine (also known as Pedro Perry) has made his debut as an illustrator with the release of the children’s book Shelly Goes Outdoors alongside friend and author Kentrell Martin. The book places emphasis on teaching ASL (American Sign Language) to children as well as adults. This book is part of a series, which the artist will continue until its completion.

Check out http://www.trafford.com for more details.

Keep your eyes and ears open as there will be two publications by Pedro Jermaine released in the near future. The first publication will be a children’s book which will take your child on a journey through the seasons while providing beautiful illustrations, bringing the seasons to life. The second publication will be an inspirational book which has been completed and contains approximately 60 poems. Fueled from his life as a motivational speaker, the artist seeks to encourage and inspire others. The book of poetry takes a look at his life and events, which inspired him along the way. As he puts it,
"This book represents the last 21 years of my life. It took some time to complete the book because I only write when I feel hurt or pain, happiness or joy. I don’t force myself to write poetry. I write poetry when my spirit forces me to. So it is rare. These writings represent an outlet, a way to express what I am feeling at that moment in time."
